Educating Art NYC
My experience as an Art Educator in the New York City public school system for over 30 years has led me on many remarkable journeys that have captured the ever present cultural reality of the diversity of my students. I have taught students from predominately lower to middle income economic levels. Within this educational system and social/economic environment, I have encountered students from various backgrounds. One of my main objectives as an Art Educator has been to explore domestically the dynamic backgrounds of individual students, while exposing them to the various cultures; traditions; art methods, and materials of other cultures globally.

Annual Art Gala
The Annual Art Gala was a yearly exhibit and performance showcasing student artwork and various art disciplines. I founded and coordinated this gala in 2007 at P.S.I.S. 270Q, The Gordon Parks School for Inquisitive Minds, as a means of displaying student artwork but also as a way of bringing artistic awareness to the parents and community of our students. I created a unique platform for the arts through the Annual Art Gala which was a creative and engaging celebration of all art forms. For eight years, I organized and facilitated the Annual Art Gala at P.S.I.S. 270Q with the support of administration and a hands-on parent coordinator. I developed the school's art gallery which showcased the amazing talents of the school's aspiring young artists. I curated, co-choreographed with students, and collaborated with teachers, and professional visual artists, dancers, musicians, singers, and writers to bring about a spectacular event for all ages within the Laurelton and Rosedale, Queens, NY community.
The culmination of the Annual Art Gala included an exceptional art exhibition of artwork produced in my art classroom throughout the school year. Additionally, the students and I co-choreographed and produced outstanding and memorable global world and contemporary dance, live art, and spoken word performances. I collaborated with a dedicated team of teachers to produce instrumental and vocal music as well as theater performances. The invited professional Artists In Residence taught after school art workshops to students within their specialized arts discipline to produce a new body work for our annual show.
