The Art of China: Chinese Folk Masks

China has a rich and colorful  history and masks have played a major role in Chinese tradition. Traces of Chinese Folk Masks date back to the prehistoric age, with findings in rock  paintings of specific regions.  Early forms of mask making were generally connected with magic practices, totem worship, music and dance.

Masks are popular among several ethnic groups in China and represent  a time honored cultural phenomenon. Masks can be divided into categories according to their function and use. The different masks include: Exorcising Masks, Sorcerer's Mask, DramaticMasks/Opera/Dance Masks, Shamanic Masks, Festival and Ritual Masks and Wedding and Funeral Masks.
