Mask-Making Through The Eyes Of Students
Students in grade six took a look at the cultural traditions of both India and Africa with regards to mask masking and the significance of their use. They became familiar with the mask making tribes such as the Dogon from Mali, West Africa and the tribal town of Jawhar, from the Thane district in the state of Mahras, India as well as the type and style of mask used by the tribes. They studied various rituals and myths related to the mask, the makers of the masks and the materials used. Students made cultural connections through the art making process as well as linking similarities and differences of ritual and ceremony.
